Laundry By the Bag or Laundry By the Pound: What Gives the Most Value?

Which Delivers the Best Value: By the Bag or By the Pound Laundry Service Pricing?

If you are wondering how to get the most bang for you buck when it comes to laundry services, you might be well aware that you can choose between a company that charges you by the bag or by the pound.

Here at Bright Bubble we believe that by the pound provides the best value because you only pay for what you need, when you need it.

What is laundry-by-the-bag pricing?

Laundry by the bag is a pricing model where customers are provided a prescribed bag that they then fill and schedule for pickup when full. The provider charges for washing and folding the contents of the bag regardless of how much laundry was packed in.

The dimensions of the bags and how much weight they can pack are often published, like this example from 2U Laundry and service for bags start at around $50 per bag. This may sound wonderful—packing in as much laundry as you can sounds almost like an all-you-can-eat buffet. At face value, sounds like a deal. But the reality is, like your stomach, the bag can only pack so much.

So are you really getting your money's worth?

At Bright Bubble, when we were first devised our pricing plan, we explored this option and found that bag pricing means less value for our customers. Often a bag that claims to hold up to 30 pounds of laundry can really only hold 20 pounds or less. Perhaps the supposed 30 lb. bag could hold 30 pounds if all the laundry were heavyweight items like soiled jeans and jackets but think of the average laundry load. The average wash load holds items of varying materials, varying weights, and varying volume. Some items are lighter and fluffier (like towels and bath robes) than other and take up more room in the bag for less weight than other items.

Let's do the laundry math.

Let's do some math. Let's say you opt for a service that charges $50 for picking up and washing a bag of laundry that supposedly holds up to 30 pounds of clothes. You weigh the bag on your bathroom scale and discover your laundry only weighs 20 pounds (yet fills it to the top). $50 divided by 20 pounds means you pay $2.50 per pound. Now let's say on another occasion you fill your bag to the top and it only weighs 15 pounds. That means less value at over $3 per pound.

In addition, to get the most value one might feel compelled to only schedule a pick-up and pay the fee when a bag is full. What if you need laundry done sooner? Scheduling a pick-up for a less than full bag may feel like you're simply not getting your money's worth.

Lastly, most of these bag laundry providers will require their customers to have enough bags to cover all their laundry. So what if a bag is full and there are still a few items to add? The laundry-by-the-bag provider will either charge a weighted fee for what didn't fit in the bag in the best case scenario, or they will charge for a whole new bag in the worst case scenario. Yikes, paying another $50 (give or take) for just an extra pound or two of laundry seems a bit extreme.
